The Buzz that Was: 7-Eleven Branches Out

7-Eleven is one of the few 24-hour convenience stores that mushroomed in the Philippines in 2014. The original name of 7-Eleven was “Tote’m Stores” due to customers toting their goods. It was then changed to 7-Eleven when the convenience store extended hours of operation from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, seven times a week. It has become one of the convenience stores that is jam-packed not only with travelers making a pit stop but with locals (especially students) buying snacks and drinks.

7-Eleven, a now popular convenience store, has a variety of foods that caters to our essentials or daily cravings. It doesn't just sell snacks or drinks,  but it even has entertainment, work and school supplies to boot.

Slurpee, its most famous drink to date, has many flavors and is affordable especially for students. The store also has sodas, milk, juice drinks and water with different sizes to quench your thirst or to carry with you as you travel. Other than junk food, you will find hot dog, siopao and rice meals. The peso-saving products will surely curb your not empty your pockets.

Though the 7-Eleven brand is international, it does not leave out the country’s flavors and delicacies. It serves dishes with rice such as sisig and giniling, Filipino delicacies made out of pork.

The Basilica Minore del Santo NiƱo

Ever heard of the miraculous image of Sto Nino? Local history claims that the image of the holy child was brought to the shores of Cebu by the Spaniards as an offering to the island’s king and queen. Today, that same image is housed within the stone walls of the Sto Nino Basilica.

Local lore say that the image is miraculous and may even grant your heart’s desires. Nearly every day of the month, devotees flock to the church to pay homage to the Holy Child. The church itself is almost never empty. People light candles, offer prayers, hear mass and line up just to get to have a few seconds in front of the Sto. Nino.

Every third week of January, pilgrims from all over the country fly to Cebu just to join in the Sinulog festivities. This local festival is in honor of the Holy Child. Masses are held weeks before the actual festivities. During this time, a lot of roads will be closed within Cebu City, so driving is not recommended. Read more about Sinulog in “The Sinulog Celebration”.

Make sure you drop by the Basilica even if you are not a believer. This is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and for that reason alone, the Sto. Nino church is already considered a must-see. Take in the rich architecture of the old, and enjoy the church’s artistry. History enthusiasts and lovers of art will surely enjoy every detail of the church, from its stone walls up to its painted ceiling.

Try lining up just to see the centuries-old statue of the Holy Child and you will be amazed at its every detail. To make the most out of the Sto. Nino experience, light a candle and have a few tranquil moments at their gazebo. (CANL)

Three Most Popular Malls in Cebu - One More to Open Soon!

I don’t really know if I am biased but Cebu City, for me, only has three major malls (for now). It’s SM City Cebu, SM Consolacion and Ayala Center Cebu. These two are the favorite crowd hangout – from teens to adults to grandparents.

What makes these malls standout from the pack then?

AYALA CENTER CEBU
  1. Ayala Center Cebu has a lot of food choices – and I mean a WHOLE LOT. The Terraces is all about food. You would surely enjoy finding a spot to eat in.
  2. It has a mini park where the kids can play and tire their selves out.
  3. It has lots of shops – Mango, Guess, Fossil, Charles and Keith – you name it. It’s a perfect spot for the brand-conscious and the fashion-conscious few. For the social climbers too.
  4. It has a wide parking space. Yay.
  5. It has two major supermarkets to choose from – Metro Ayala and Rustan’s.

SM CITY CEBU
  1. SM City Cebu has an arcade that is frequented by adults and kids alike. It has a wide assortment of games and rides to ensure a full day of fun.
  2. It has a large foodcourt and a number of food choices. What I don’t like about it though is that the restaurants are not clustered in a single floor. You have to walk around to find the stuffs you like.
  3. ACE Hardware! Anything you need for your home, you can find at ACE Hardware. Batteries, locks, steel cabinets, paint, etc.
  4. It has a number of salons to choose from – Annie’s, Ricky Reyes salon, Tony & Jackie and even Salon de Rose (Do not go to Salon de Rose. Their service sucks by the way. And they are so expensive recently. So not worth the money. FYI. If you wanna try them out yourself, go ahead. Send me a feedback when you do.)
  5. They have lots of cinema halls! They have 8 cinema halls in total.

SM CONSOLACION

SM Consolacion's popularity is growing in strength by the day. SM Consolacion is of couse, located north of Cebu City, in Consolacion. It houses cinemas, salons, grocery and more!

SM City Seaside is the one located at South Road Properties (SRP), south of Cebu City. It is currently still undergoing construction but reports say that the floor area is going to be massive. Something to watch out for then, eh? (CANL)

Sloppy Dressing? Call it Normcore

Did you know that there is a term for unpretentious, casual, average-looking clothing? It's called normcore fashion. "Normcore" actually refers to the attitude of "not giving a sh&t" about what you wear" and being "nothing special".

The less you stand out from the crowd, the more normcore you are.

Typical normcore clothing items include T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, chinos, sneakers. Blouses, tailored jackets and ties are NOT normcore.

Plain t-shirt is one of the normcore staples. Photo from Wikimedia, uploaded by Camisetas.

Hoodies too. Image from Wikimedia, uploaded by Ubcule.

Fuss-free jeans for men. Remember, embellished jeans are not normcore though, Image from Wikimedia, uploaded by Cropbot.

So now you have something to call your fashion sense on days you are too lazy to dress up.

Video: Magic Tree Bears 40 Different Fruits

Can a tree yield 40 different types of fruits?

Apparently it can.

Created by Sam Van Aken, this "Tree of 40 Fruit" blossoms flowers of various colors and its fruits include peaches, plum, apricots, nectarines, cherries and almonds.

Van Aken, a professor from Syracuse University in New York, used a special technique called "sculpture through grafting". This involves taking a budding sliver from a fruit tree and implanting into on his new tree. He claims that it took 8-9 years and US$30,000 to complete his masterpiece.

Watch the video below and tell us what you think. Is Van Aken an artist or is he just playing "god"?
